555 Days... The Continuation

Welcome to 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe

Back in 2010, I challenged myself to write a poem or a short verse a day, and post it to a blog. 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe is the continuation of the experiment.

I gave myself 18 months to recover from the original daily blog postings, and now, I am ready to start it all over again. Although as I was beginning in the middle of the year, I thought 6 months was too short a time after my last experience.

"If I could complete a year of poems, how about 18 months?" I thought. I worked out that would be 549 days. I could have rounded it up to 550 to included New Years Day 2014, but then I thought I'd go 5 better... to 555 days.

Why 555? According to many spiritual teachers, the number 555 is a sign of change and the flow of energy. I thought it related to the blog. I spent a year writing a poem every day, then rested for 18 months. Now the tide has turned. It's time to begin the flow of words in my life again.

I'm not a trained poet, just an enthusiastic scribe wanting to create something new each day. I don't truly know my stanza from my meter, but I hope to improve and get my poetic license someday! Expect the weird, the strange and the inner workings of the Crafty Scribe's mind. Let's ride the waves once more.

Please pass on the blog address to all your verse and lyrical loving friends. I hope you will join me, and read my daily scribbling.

"It's Cyn for a Bridesmaid" (Entry 527)

Cynthia smoothed the bridesmaid’s dress front.
Neon orange taffeta with shit brown velvet ribbon sash,
designed to look good on nobody, except the bride,
who wore a dazzling array of crystals and net in
‘hasn’t-been-a-virgin-since-the-ninth-grade’ white.

“I won’t wear it! I won’t!”
Cynthia screamed in the privacy of her own thoughts.
It was the only place
she was going to find decent conversation tonight,
in this cacophony of chavs,
otherwise known as The Bridal Party.

“Thia! This!”
Someone called her in her least favourite nickname.
“Thia! I was just telling Jade that it’s your fifth time.
As they say, Always a Bridesmaid…”
“Never A Bride!”

The others joined in, howls of laughter.
Five tango’d
fake tanned
fake personality
harpies hooting and ganging up.
Holler after shriek, after pointing after snarl.

This was the pinnacle,
Or was she just being cynical?
She had to do it, didn’t she?
They deserved it.
They bullied her.
In fact, it was self-defence.
She couldn’t wear that dress
or put up with them.
She had to do it.

The last words they heard was her call.
She was still telling the police as they led her away
from the bloodbath and carnage of the bridal party.
"My name is Cyn! I’m Cyn!
Do you hear me? I’m Cyn!”

"What Are You Wearing?" ( Entry 479)

What's in season?
What's in the stores?
Watch the trends turn.
Seen all that before.
Choose a shape, then
A favourite shade.
Take to the street.
Daily catwalk parade.
Living the life
By cut and colour.
Fashion's on show
By the pound and the dollar.
By the time that you own it,
It's already old hat.
What's the deal in a year?
'Cause I'm wearing that!

"Fashionista's Front" (Entry 465)

So proud and haughty.
(And slightly naughty?)
Attempt at hiding the glimpse
Of emotions flair.
Forcing down the twinkling imp.
Pads on lacquer held in lap.
Would a smile really sap
The veneer you harden?
So not to appear to beg the pardon
Of the lower mortals, lesser classes
With laser eyes, these social unordered lasses.
Crossed ankles, uncrossed vision.
An upturned snout shows derision.
What's behind the mannequin you wear?
Is it joyous, clever, or is nothing there?
That's what people expect, isn't it?
But I don't think that. Not one bit!

"Believe in You!" (Entry 393)

Bellow loud!
Bellow proud!
Lift your head above the crowd.
Be the best!
Have a quest!
Make your life count, this is your test.
Show your style.
Wear a smile!
Live and love and be still awhile.
Believe in you!
Conceive what's true.
Achieve each day as if it's new.

"Nerds, Freaks, Geeks" (Entry 318)

Nerds, Freaks, Geeks.
Their world made chic.
Cos play and conventions
Taken over by wrong intentions.
Inhabited now by bullies and jocks
Just because it's cool. You know, sorta rocks!
But the Geeks and Nerds and Freaks remember,
The way you treated them. It's sparked the ember
And lit the flames long suppressed.
Don't enter their world, you don't know what you'll get.
It was you that named them Freak, Nerd and Geek.
Now they've inherited the world, and they ain't meek.

"Hippy Hipster Hooray!" (Entry 306)

Are you a retro spec'd Hipster
with homemade knits and bakes,
Or just hip to be square with
bony muscular aches?

Are you into Steampunk
and hang out in vintage saloons,
Or a vibe DJ master
spinning latest tunes?

Or are you a hippy that trips
in kaftan and beads.
Or a book nerd gone digital
cyber-browsing Good Reads?

Are you chic and on-trend
In hip-hugger jeans,
or a sequin away from 70s
Hustle disco queens?

Let me shoot from the hip,
wherever you fall.
Just be who you are,
follow your path and your call.

Remember my words,
Be You in your own way.
Live your life as you want it -
Shout Hip Hip Hooray!

"Still Summer" (Entry 170)

Winter fashions stacked high on racks,
pushing out bikinis and shorts and minis,
to wooly scarfs who laugh at ageing suntan lotion,
but it's still summer though change in motion,
shouts "Back to School" with uniform rules,
like stitch in the label.
Then the Christmas table,
with presents piled high.
Can't they stay in the present,
it's only July!

"To Nail Time" (Entry 135)

The long languid humid afternoon took its toll as she painted her nails.
Time was on her side, the heat was not.
Lacquer congealed as she stroked across each acrylic tapered talon.
Ridges formed in thick glop making the tortuous task tiresome, but not... impossible.
Base coat to
two coats of "Impatient Kiss", a bitten blood-soaked scarlet tone.
Then topped off in top coat to gleam, gloss and even.
But even then -
All she had to do was wait.

"A Change of Clothes" (Entry 128)

They were given to me, these genes.
Adapted from babe through teens.
I'm a hand-me-down girl,
Wishing for designer twirl
On life and all that it brings.
No more sad charity thing(s).
For it's time for a better plan.
Of changing clothes, not a fan.
Leave the vintage behind.
Look to future that's my kin(d).

"First Birds" (Entry 11)

They twittered,
fluffing and preening.
Calling to each other.

As the sun moved across the sky,
time became a priority.

They began to flap,
trilling and pecking.
Facing to book those unprepared.

Until it was the moment for them
to fly out into the world.

The first birds glowed in their finery.
Vying for position,
they entered the school disco.

They the first.
These little pretty preening twittering birds
ready for the music.
Ready where they belong.
