555 Days... The Continuation

Welcome to 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe

Back in 2010, I challenged myself to write a poem or a short verse a day, and post it to a blog. 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe is the continuation of the experiment.

I gave myself 18 months to recover from the original daily blog postings, and now, I am ready to start it all over again. Although as I was beginning in the middle of the year, I thought 6 months was too short a time after my last experience.

"If I could complete a year of poems, how about 18 months?" I thought. I worked out that would be 549 days. I could have rounded it up to 550 to included New Years Day 2014, but then I thought I'd go 5 better... to 555 days.

Why 555? According to many spiritual teachers, the number 555 is a sign of change and the flow of energy. I thought it related to the blog. I spent a year writing a poem every day, then rested for 18 months. Now the tide has turned. It's time to begin the flow of words in my life again.

I'm not a trained poet, just an enthusiastic scribe wanting to create something new each day. I don't truly know my stanza from my meter, but I hope to improve and get my poetic license someday! Expect the weird, the strange and the inner workings of the Crafty Scribe's mind. Let's ride the waves once more.

Please pass on the blog address to all your verse and lyrical loving friends. I hope you will join me, and read my daily scribbling.

"Future Gifts" (Entry 540)

Burden or gift?
Power or responsibility?
Crushed or weighed heavy?
What present will be present in your future?

"Searing Storm" (Entry 537)

It was the day after the news broke.
Heading our way.
Hot wind in this cold land.
No way for us to leave.
Barricaded windows,
Set our stores
to the centre of the cabin
and waited.

Might be the lucky ones.
No idea how the packed ice of millennia
would react when it hit.
The hot wind. The searing storm.
World turned on the axis,
changing weather patterns and tides.
Even altering magnetic compass itself.
We waited.

Fearing to speak,
thinking our breath would invite.
Vast three figure mileage tornado to join the silent air.
More than a tornado, more than a storm,
formed from boiling desert temperatures
whipping razor sharp sand shards into the air,
building, expanding,
grabbing with greed everything it touches.
Bringing it towards us.
We waited.

We had no idea how the rest of the world had faired.
Communications collapsed.
So we prepared, worried, joked, mourned and waited.
We waited.

"'A' Testing Time" (Entry 525)

He stared at the back of the exam paper.
Three years culmination.
Ends here.
Or starts here.
Studied and revised.
Always studied and revised.
Every test and assignment
rewarded an ‘A’.
Top of class with confidence.

Why now was memory
as thick as mud.
Brain cells dead.
A zombie in Gap jeans.
Nothing but mash between the ears.

Gulping oxygen and panic,
he straightened the lone pencil above
the glaring black back sheet on
worn wooden square slab.

Progress checked on examiner who
place the same items on other victims desk
in echoing gym.
Step - paper slap - pencil tap -
step - slap - tap -
step - slap - tap.
The anxious and the eager sliently acknowledging the delivery.

He remembered nothing.
Nothing.
Pressure demanding their use of a vice
on his brain oozing any knowledge
to dribble out of his ears
leaving mush.
Nothing.

Examiner finished his dance and shuffled to the front,
checked his watch
until allotted time.
No stay of execution this day.
“You may begin.”

He turned over the page,
information reformed,
remoulded,
reappeared.
The questions washing away the mud,
memory flooding in.
Another ‘A’ this day!

"The Drop" (Entry 515)

Head raced.
Packet hidden.
Pace towards exit.
Too late?
Clock glanced!
Not too late!
No choice. No choice?
Fingernails dug to palms.
Hankie retrieved.
Face wiped.
Keep calm! Keep calm!
You'll get there!
Head down.
Shoulders raised.
Hands shaking,
shoved into pockets.
Right touched parcel,
Adder sting of evidence.
Remembrance of
what must be done.
Door reached.
‘Miss! Miss!”
Pace quickened.
Heavy hand on shoulder.
Spun round.
Heart pound.
Face to face
Security Guard with
guarded smirk.
“Sorry, Miss.
You didn’t hear me.
I think you dropped this.”
A glance down to
Her hankie!

(Gratefully retrieved.
Out of the exit.
She'd make the birthday party
after all!)

"See On" (Entry 507)

You see! You see!
The truth of judgements.
Who are you to see, you see?
No idea. Think on and think some more.
Take a moment, and look again.
You’ll see.

"Celebration Time" (Entry 504)

Celebration a life that’s lived.
Celebrate, enjoy, all it gives.
Be thankful for what you’ve got.
Look! Notice! It’s more than you know,
it’s quite a lot.
Give a smile, a grin and laughter.
This is your time, now and the ever after.

"Dream Time Far" (Entry 494)

The dream developed
far beyond where details
lay
and thrust upon the
newest of times gone by,
the yesterday.

"The You-glued-Tube" (Entry 430)

Oh, the days I have spent watching You Tube clips
Going from one video to another then more.

I clicked on to find out time management tips,
Three hours later, glued to wood whittling post-war!

"Turning Brown at the Edges" (Entry 423)

Quick! Cram, all you can.
Into Summer's salad days.
Before Autumn hits.

"Second Sigh" (Entry 422)

I sigh!
Sigh!
Sigh again.
Oh, why?
'Cause
Seconds
Slip away,
By and by.
Without
Purpose,
Due worth
Or fun.
Gone
Forever,
Time's past,
It's done.

"Journal the Joy" (Entry 421)

These days special,
Never to forget...
And yet.
They will fade,
As must,
It's meant to be.
So write, record
Note and photograph.
To keep a little sharper
In memory.

"Ask Questions of Queue" (Entry 413)

We take our places in the queue.
Hoping it leads to something new.
Unexplained situations? Too polite to ask.
Being coaxed to perform unknown tasks.
Nation rules and laws, we follow.
Easy to govern, with a future hollow.
What? Where? Why? How? All forgotten.
When and who? Us and now - society's rotten.

"Poetic Devotion" (Entry 411)

Feel your spirits pulse and thrill,
Rejoice in empathy even when still.
Be compassion and all poetic.
Be this and more, not unsympathetic.

Give and take all emotion.
Live with enthusiasm and devotion.
Experience all there is and can be.
Enjoy the moments. That's life, you see!

"A Moment" (Entry 406)

Ballerina slipper top of stair,
I sit and wonder
Made aware
That it isn't long, til I will die
To feel a moment.
Then a sigh
Is it true that this is what I dare?
It's what I hope, what's
In my prayer.

"Of Nothing" (Entry 402)

I think of nothing
Where I lie.
For I'm in death.
We said, goodbye.
So now for time
Of all forever.
I slumber on
Without endeavour.

"Grey Metal Box?" (Entry 390)

Cold and rusty.
It's so dusty.
What was it used for?
There's buttons for movement.
I know what it is!
I've see photos.
I know it's so ancient.
But that's where the tape goes.
No one under a certain age knows.
What a VHS player is.
Let alone a rotary phone!
These long lost mechanicals hiding in lofts?
Just think that's where the gadgets of now will end up - unboxed!

"A Raw Silence" (Entry 388)

Some thing's enter this life with a roar.
A human baby's cry that parents adore.
First breath of announcement or even anguish.
New born arrival comes with its own language.
A New Year enters by fireworks and bells.
Artificial time's passing with songs, chants and yells.

Then there's those that enter by way of silence. No sound.
Like true time shown without whisper by that wrinkle newly found.
Nor does the spider on its web and it weaves.
Or death which enters when the last sigh leaves.

Then do we dare step beyond to see who are the silent that enter?
Like Angels, the unseen, who live at soul's centre.
The hosts of energy, love is their being.
They whisper in the quiet - all-knowing, all-seeing.

"The Summons" (Entry 375)

Metal-tipped stiletto heels echo on marble floor.
Reverberate in smoke-like tendrils to somber dome above.
Nervous unrhythmic tapping,
As an ancient typewriter hitting and leaving its mark.
Repetition rebound around the rotunda atrium melding into next.

It wasn't fair!
She had been summoned.
There was no refusal.
She arrived on time,
But had been kept waiting.
Sweat her out!
Why was she made to feel guilty?

She jolted as sight met with uniformed guard,
And held.
Steely blue ex-service beneath peaked cap to
Brown and teary, fighting fear, to point of sending mascara flowing in inky ribbons over alabaster cheeks,
As pale as any statue that graced this hallowed hall.
He sat as judge, jury and executioner
Behind raised and ruling oak desk.
Her gaze fazed first.

Desperate to find new eye line.
Hard, dark, wood bench.
New project.
She sat tentatively on the same spot as
Rumps by the multiple had polished before.
A grey suited identikit drone loomed and slithered from behind a heavy ornate door.

Her fingers gripped and well-worn edge as she screamed inside.
Why her?
What was she doing here?
It wasn't her fault? Wasn't her desire?
Who truly wants to work here?
Not her!
Why go through all this when she didn't want the job!
She rose to go.
But the drone approached.
He lifted his chin a little higher to peer down her nose to her.
Nostrils quivering as he sniffed,
"Miss Cavendish. Your father will see you now."

"Unordered to Chaos" (Entry 368)

He always sat at the corner table
and ate his usual.
Calm in the morning chaos.

Cappuccino arriving at 10.
Balanced between laptop, phone and book.
That leather notebook, worn and greying black, shiny and edges bare.
Always scribbling within those pages.
Could it really be the same one?
It seemed that way.
Broken spine, unravelling seams, endless pages, curling corners.
A wedge of notes. Always writing.
Disordered document designing dark destinies,
Or maybe at most
Muddled mutterings of man men.
Scribble, scribble. Scribble, scribble!

Laptop on and open, but never fingers on keyboard.
When he answered his calls,
it was with curt yes or no.
Nothing more.
Never ringing between 12:30 and 1.
They knew not to, it's lunch.

House pasta of the day.
Never asked what it was.
The plate placed upon red and white gingham cloth.
Checking the notebook to one side.
Crossing the phone to the other
As a thimble-sized glass of something red joins the game.

He ate quickly, always writing his notes.
Cleared away,
The afternoon continued just as the morn.
Tiramisu appeared at 2,
quickly followed by espresso.

Then at 5, a brandy. Maybe.
Well, always a goblet of some such red,
As he closed his untouched laptop
And the worn-out notebook.
Packed up, paid.
Out the door without a word.

Everyday the same.
He never ordered or complained
They knew what he wanted.
That's how it remained.
Tomorrow and all tomorrow's again and again.
A mystery in the mundane.
