555 Days... The Continuation

Welcome to 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe

Back in 2010, I challenged myself to write a poem or a short verse a day, and post it to a blog. 555 Days as a Poet by The Crafty Scribe is the continuation of the experiment.

I gave myself 18 months to recover from the original daily blog postings, and now, I am ready to start it all over again. Although as I was beginning in the middle of the year, I thought 6 months was too short a time after my last experience.

"If I could complete a year of poems, how about 18 months?" I thought. I worked out that would be 549 days. I could have rounded it up to 550 to included New Years Day 2014, but then I thought I'd go 5 better... to 555 days.

Why 555? According to many spiritual teachers, the number 555 is a sign of change and the flow of energy. I thought it related to the blog. I spent a year writing a poem every day, then rested for 18 months. Now the tide has turned. It's time to begin the flow of words in my life again.

I'm not a trained poet, just an enthusiastic scribe wanting to create something new each day. I don't truly know my stanza from my meter, but I hope to improve and get my poetic license someday! Expect the weird, the strange and the inner workings of the Crafty Scribe's mind. Let's ride the waves once more.

Please pass on the blog address to all your verse and lyrical loving friends. I hope you will join me, and read my daily scribbling.

"It's A Cracker!" (Entry 545)

Last cracker pulled.
A snap of last pop.
Toy of bright plastic,
Unsold in a shop.
A cracker’s for Christmas, only one day.
Rest of the year, never a thought comes their way.

Mirth mists dissipated
from bad jokes hidden yawn.
Hat lays discarded,
Ripped and forlorn.
Joy that they gave, gone in a flash.
Cardboard gather together and into the trash.

"In Glade's Embrace" (Entry 539)

The bats continue their symphony.
Leading and guiding the way.
Follow the path unseen.
Travel where only the blessed have tread.
Relief as companions appear
from the shadowed embrace of oaks.
Carry holly and the mistletoe.
Enter the glade together.
Ceremony.
Sacred space.
Home.

Happy Yule to all of you celebrating today. Blessed Be!

"Roll End Credits" (Entry 535)

Darkness enveloping behind my eyes,
rolling in the credits - starring Me - produced by This Day - directed by The Fates.

It's so late.

Leaden arms try to heave the carcass up the stairs.
Am I wearing concrete boots?
I don’t remember.
Stare down to bare feet on bedroom carpet,
wearily peeling layers away.
Top layer cardigan worn to stave off the cold.

Try to unbutton a shirt with fingers
that feel as useful as balloon animals.
I wonder if, these are the same that
deftly moved across the keyboard in rhythmic dance all day?

Eventually, I move to unzip jeans that appear
a size or two smaller than the ones
I jumped into this morning.

Bosom heaved from bra to breathe
an expanding sigh of relief.
I lie on the bed and do
a horizontal twist
to remove the last scrap of material from bum and hips.

Snuggle behind the quilt to sleep.
To sleep, with dreams.
Ahhhhhhh,
What bliss is this!

Credits roll on to The End.

"Coast Road" (Entry 438)

Drive the coat road.
A signature scrawled.
Bend beyond bend.
Chiseled melt of sand belt
Against soothing moving vast potion of ocean.

To drive, to see,
For, I am home.
My place to be.
Single lanes of dipping, slipping, Tarmac'd heat.
Overtaking, sliding, squeaking on leather seat.

This slick grey snake slinks
from north to south, south to north,
As sun slices and sinks beyond
the ebb and flow of expanse burst forth.

To drive, to see.
For, I am home.
My place to be.
My place to be.

"House Unloved" (Entry 432)

Uninviting,
No welcome mat before
Great rusted iron doors.
Decades decay,
Peeling pea green paint,
Sticky splintered structure,
ancient.
Derelict dire darkness.
Place for dead?
Not yet.
Unloved. Unwanted.
A house that forgot it was once a home.

"Happy and Safe" (Entry 431)

Bring me talk of happy times.
Of love and dreams and goals.
Offer me laughter like tinkling chimes.
Be with me and stay in these roles.

Let's behave like comical actors,
With lines full of wit and much charm.
Hide from me all the negative factors.
In here, we are safe, there's no harm.

"A Glimmer of First Memory" (Entry 363)

The white towel lies on tan mat
Before three cream tiles turning
Blushing red in the gas fire.
Heat licks,
protected by shining silver grills,
Like strawberry stained teeth
behind cheerleader's braces.
The dulled-by-use to brown patterned sofa sits strangely empty,
Normally filled by soft smiles and warm hugs.
There, the memory ends.

"Journey to a New Life" (Entry 359)

Twice cars filled. Piled high.
Including kittens times two.
Off on our life's journey.
To see the southern view.

Moving forward to a new future, town and home.
Trepid explorers on
Towards the bright unknown.

Onward we went travelling
In the right direction.
'Til drives end for
We had reached our destination.

"A Spider's Eye's Views" (Entry 358)

Spider weaves her web.
Day's work of intricate lace.
To perch at its centre.
Bull's eye of its endeavours.

Stretched across the window.
She could see the beings within.
These giants scared her.
She knew the dangers they held.

They could destroy her home and her life
With a flick of their long upper leg.
She was anxious of these animals
With their to-ings and their weird busy-ness lives.

Fancy them only having four legs and two eyes.
How on web did they ever manage?
As long as she could see them and they left her alone.
She was happy to watch these creatures, so ugly!

The more she viewed their habits.
The more she came to love their strange ways.
Though from her webbed side of the window,
She could never understand what they did.

Of an evening, they stared at a light in the corner,
Like moths to a flickering moon.
By day, most never stopped moving,
How did they ever ever catch food?

Then her web quivered. A fly caught.
To buzz and hum its distress.
So along silken wires, Spider scurried.
Enough nature watching, back to work!

"Returning Home" (Entry 352)

The body listless.
Mind buzzing.
Key in door.
Unlocked.
Swing open.
I exhale.
In that breath,
familiar scents.
Warm, comforting, safe.
We are home,
at last!

"Mundane No Magic" (Entry 329)

Grab the groceries.
No jiggery-pokery.
Zip to the shops.
It's a regular stop.
Daily - weekly buys.
All done with a sigh.
Just lists and tears.
No magic here.
Mundane goods.
Just as it should.

"Houseplant Haiku" (Entry 323)

Houseplant enters home.
Shiny tongues- deep green leaves lap.
Welcome. You belong.

"Empty" (Entry 308)

The empty drawer pulled open,
To spy beyond (and truly see)
The thing that was never there.

"Impress and Make the Grade" (Entry 303)

Before the guests arrived...
There were tears.
Lots of them.
First celebration.
With in-laws, no less!

Lists were made.
Crossed off
and rewritten.
Again and again and,
still he had strayed!

Yes, his fault!
He hadn't helped.
Wrong wine.
Went 'off-list'.
Only his 'rents, he said.
This is such a mess!

Just his parents?
Just his eagle-eyed mother.
Spotting dust at 90 paces,
and her pecky way of eating.
Less trouble if royalty stayed.

Cushions were plumped.
Table cloth et al, ready.
Prepared.
Glasses gleaming,
free from finger marks, no less!

Ruby and emerald baubles
hung balanced throughout
the real Christmas tree.
Then she noticed,
on the lights, just one,
its glow - gone out.
Right by where the table was laid.

Enough to cause panic,
a torrent of snot-ridden tears.
He held her, and calmed her.
Then shoved the offending bulb
behind glittering balls and
plenty of needles.
An action to deflect all of this stress.

Finally, everything perfect.
The aroma of the seasons lingered
in the air, as pots bubbled in the kitchen.
A moment of joy,
before the guests arrived.
As the anxiety began to fade.

The door bell rang,
soon the house was full.
Of noises, and presents,
boots, coats and old folk.
It seemed such a good start,
even a success.

All smiles and movement
into the lounge.
Where Queen-in-law devoured
the image in a single glance.
"You've got a bulb out, did you know?"
sniffed the old maid.

They'd tried to impress.
But with one line conveyed,
contained such negativity assess.
Caused celebration downgrade.
Depress and Dismayed!

"Tub Soak" (Entry 232)

Bathe in the lap of china tub.
Soak and wash with salty rub.
Take your time, unstress and scrub.
This, the watery haven beyond the hubbub.

"Power to the Shower" (Entry 222)

Oh, I wish, when I took a shower,
The water had a lot more power.
I want it to feel like tropic rain.
Instead it spits, in drops, what a pain!
I've known cat licks
Wetter than this.

"Secrets Beneath The Bricks" (Entry 207)

Each owner buys this history of property.
Every word spent and action invented,
seeps deep into bricks and wood. .
Hatred ricocheting off ceilings,
tears drown floorboards,
and laughter ripples through stipples walls.
Every house has its secrets.
They never tell, only curate.

"Live Away" (Entry 197)

This statement is full of nonsense.
A stalemate of words so dense.
You can never live away from home.
For when you travel, where'er you roam.
Isn't that where you live?
Your home is the heart you give.

"Discovered Country" (Entry 181)

Mapped out before me.
Everything in its place.
Known beyond the back of your hand.
This discovered country.
This home.
My land.

"Life Story" (Entry 147)

Childhood.
Scattered with pain and time alone.
Made up with warmth and laughter of home.
Welcomed and cared for. Taught me right.
Proper behaviour rewarded by an all-inclusive life.
